SIT-STAY FOR HARNESSING
At the end of training, the dog will hold a sit-stay while being harnessed.
This plan is for dogs who are mildly uncomfortable with harnessing or just don't sit still to be harnessed, but it can be used for any dog. Dogs who are very fearful of the harness will need the plan broken down into smaller steps.
Complete steps 1-11 outside of the kennel if working with a shelter dog.
Repeat each step 10 times. Getting it “right” = the dog holds his sit & doesn’t flinch or move his head away from the harness at all.
-
If the dog gets it right 10 out of 10 times, move to next step.
-
If the dog gets it right 9 out of 10 times, repeat the current step.
-
If the dog gets it right 8 or fewer times, drop to the previous step.
